Recently, a woman in a Christian small group told me this story. She had been nursing her elderly mother in another state and it had come time to drive home. She was exhausted, so she prayed for safety and phoned her small group for prayer.
Then as she prepared to leave, she had the feeling that she should take the cross-country route home. She normally went by Interstate. But now she felt that she should take the country roads home. So she started out on the rural route, and turned on her CD player as she drove.
Soon her car was filled with Christian music. She said, “Then I began to notice the green fields, ponds, rolling hills, and farms. I saw white country churches and, the more I drove, the better I felt. There was no traffic and there didn’t even seem to be bumps in the road.
She continued, “I stopped for a snack at a little country store and chatted with the owner. I seemed to float home, and I arrived home fresher than I had been when I left. I was completely rested and happy as I pulled in the driveway.”
“And then it hit me. I had been Spirit-Filled during the drive. I had done what the apostle Paul called behaving in the Spirit. It was wonderful.”
This Christian woman had allowed the Holy Spirit to produce joy and peace in her during her trip. But – that’s how it’s supposed to be with Christians. One of the Holy Spirit’s purposes is to produce joy and peace in us when we obey His promptings. So shouldn’t all of us obey Him? Shouldn’t all of us feel the same peace, comfort, and rest that this woman felt on her drive through the countryside? I think we should. What do you think?
