The Three Kinds of Early Christian Style Small Groups

Any of these three kinds of Christian small groups can be Spiritual – depending on how much the participants allow the Spirit to motivate them.  However, the social and teaching type small groups tend to be less Spiritual because the activities involved in them (meals, games, videos, etc.) tend to occupy the minds of the participants and thus make them less Spiritual.  Spiritual type small groups, on the other hand, tend to be the most Spiritual of the three types because their purpose is nothing but praise and worship.  Here are the three types of small groups:

      1.  Social Small Groups.  These include meals, picnics, outings, sports, games, etc.

      2.  Teaching Small Groups.  These include Bible studies, seminars, retreats, videos, etc.

      3.  Worship Small Groups.  These include singing, prayer, praise, prophecies, etc.

It’s important to realize that small groups can “change identities” at any time, and often do.  In other words, during the same meeting, a small group can flow from worship into a meal; or from a meal into teaching; or from teaching into worship, etc.  Thus, most Christian small groups serve all of these roles at some time.  However, a small group should decide it’s main role and emphasize that main role – and that main role should normally be the role of a worship type group, since that’s the type that creates the most Spiritual growth in participants, and Spiritual growth is the main goal of all Christians.
